Is User Testing Legit Or A Waste Of Time!?

is user testing legit

User Testing is a platform that allows it’s testers to evaluate different websites while sharing their experiences and offering feedback in which you can get paid. So, is User Testing legit?

I haven’t been with them long, but in my experience it’s 100% legit and even a bit of fun to be apart of.

The Task

Pretty much, you’re recording your thoughts aloud while visiting the websites that are given to you, your feedback allows companies to see what things aren’t working on their sites/apps so they can fix the problem.

Being a tester will not replace a full-time income, but it is an honest way to make a little extra cash online. There are other options for those interested in learning how to make a full-time income from home, but it will require a bit more work.

Another plus about being apart of User Testing is that anyone can apply to become a tester, considering you have the following.

What You Will Need

There is a complete list of qualifying countries which you can view here and by simply scrolling down near the bottom. Other then that, here is what you will need to qualify:

  • Access to a computer, internet, microphone
  • iPhone, iPad, Android phone or Android tablet If you’d like to take Mobile tests
  • Download the testing software
  • 18 years or older, and able to speak your thoughts aloud while reviewing websites

For those interested in joining who do not own a microphone:is user testing legit

  • Go Hands-Free. Most new cellphones come with hands-free headsets
  • Built-In. Most laptops have built-in microphones. I am not 100% a built in microphone will suffice but have been in contact with their support and waiting on a reply.
  • Treat Yourself. Buy a new inexpensive headset, you can find headsets for less than $10. There’s no need to go all out…

It’s really up to you. Again, there’s other ways of making money online that do not require you to record yourself at all.

What Is User Testing?

The end goal of User Testing is to help companies get a unique look at a customers perspective and experiences while first encountering their site and even mobile apps.

Companies pay for User Testing’s services (to have their online businesses viewed), and as a tester you can earn you a slice of the pie.

It’s a neat concept and makes sense for companies to want to be apart of from a business and marketing standpoint. Many of your favorite companies are already participating:

When first joining, there is an application process which basically walks you through the steps of getting setup with the software (downloading their screen recorder),submitting a sample test, and a basic demographic.

To be honest, I remember how awkward it was at first leading up to the sample test in which you are being recorded. I had no clue what to say or expect.

But again, they do a really good job of walking you through the test and giving you tasks to do while being recorded which really alleviates the awkwardness of it.

Once you hit launch during the application, their software will pop up allowing you to follow the instructions from there.

Due to these simple instructions, after a couple minutes went by it was breeze and I even forgot that I was being tested (almost). The key is just to keep talking about what you see on the website and your experience while on there.

I truly look forward to participating in new reviews now when the opportunity rises, of course earning money is nice too…

How Much Can You Earn

Per each 20-min review that you do, you will receive up to $10. Again with given tasks 20 minutes rushes by.

It’s mentioned on the site that new tests are given daily – easy money. The trick is to respond to these emails as soon as possible because new tests act as first come first serve. Once a review is submitted and approved for that particular test, that opportunity is gone.

Qualifying for new tests will require a few questions which is a nice change of pace as opposed to your traditional surveys sites.is user testing legit

On other sites, you can easily spend 15 minutes applying for a survey online only to be denied, even if your already member of that survey site. RIDICULOUS, I know.

That’s clearly another bonus for User Testing. One more thing worth noting is that you will get paid exactly 7 days after you submit an approved test.

The chances of getting disapproved for a review is as rare as 1% according to the website. In this event, you will not be paid. But if all goes well expect a nice little addition to your PayPal account, which is the only way to be paid by User Testing at this time.

I’ve seen people claiming to earn up to $200 in a single month using User Testing, but haven’t made that much myself.

Who Is User Testing For?

User Testing is for anyone comfortable enough to record their thoughts out loud while viewing unfamiliar websites, someone who can follow directions, and for anyone interested in making a few extra bucks online in the name of marketing research…

It’s really as easy as completing the tasks given to you, sharing your honest experience aloud, and clicking ‘Done’:

UserTesting - Overall Rating

I really enjoy the entire concept as it allows online business owners, marketers, developers, etc., to get an idea how new visitors view and navigate through their website.

It’s a fun way to make a little extra money on the side and all you are doing is following instructions.

As a tester, the website/app and tasks are all assigned to you. You just share your thoughts and opinions out loud. That’s it!

The company has only been around 7 years to date and it’s interesting what, if any, new features or bonuses will occur in the near future. IF this seems like something you would enjoy doing, give User Testing a visit.

If you are interested in learning about other honest ways to begin earning online, swing by my top recommendations. You will find other excellent companies which are free to join as well.

Please feel free to share your experiences or questions regarding UserTesting below 🙂

My goal for this website is to help those who are looking to make money online from the comfort of their home and to offer people an alternative to the FIXED 9-to-5 life. Whether you are looking to make full time income online or just looking to make some extra cash. I've got you covered.

What a fantastic concept! This could be very useful in the future for me for being a reviewer (earn some extra money) plus having my own website reviewed by others… this would allow me to get a good advantage on my competition!

Thanks for providing all the info on UserTesting and filling me in!

    Cheers

    Mason

    • Jason Jason says:

It’s funny you mentioned that. Just as any business owner can pay to have their website evaluated, they can also pay to have a competitors product evaluated.

      Talk about equal opportunity!

Thanks for commenting Mason, let me know how it works out for you.

  • Jason Megan says:

So I was reading your article about user testing, and I had no idea that there was something out there like that. That’s really cool, I honestly didn’t know you could even do that let alone make any money from it. The concept is definitely cool and its great that you’ve used this avenue to shed some light on other ways to make a little extra income rather than sitting doing surveys all day.

    • Jason Jason says:

      Agreed.

I do appreciate the legitimate survey sites that are out there. Some people really enjoy the simplicity and convenience of survey taking which UserTesting provides, but with a fun twist.

And the pay is OK as well.

I was happy to come across UserTesting and be able to add it to my list to share with others wanting to make extra money online.

Thanks for stopping by Megan! if you decide to give it a try, let us know how UserTesting worked out for you 🙂

Hi Jason, this sounds fascinating. It reminds me a little bit like sending voice samples to be selected for voice-overs but MUCH BETTER. Totally interested in trying it out now. Thanks for the review!

  • Jason Syl says:

If you’re thinking about applying note that not everyone will do well with this site. They use an algorithm to determine eligibility for tests – not in the sense of demographics, (all market research firms allow the client to select for demographics) but they use quality control. This is why I love working as a tester for them. The more 5 star ratings you get from clients, the more tests you get first access to. If you get a few bad reviews, you won’t be one of the first users to be sent the next test. So make sure you take it seriously if you want to make money.

Other sites don’t seem to care about quality of reviews so nothing sets you apart, you’re just a name on a list that they mass email test opportunities to. Usertesting isn’t like that.

I make about 100-180 a month with usertesting alone. Other sites I make about 20. UT also has opportunities for longer tests that pay more, and bonuses (usually about 10$) for slightly longer tests at the clients discretion. (The test will say something like, “if the client is happy with your test, a bonus for extra time spent will be awarded.”) I love usertesting. Just make sure you are thoughtful and give constructive criticism and you’ll be rewarded with more tests!

ALSO, don’t wait to get an email about a test, I don’t even have the email alert function on- they suggest keeping the dashboard open whenever you’re on the computer. This is another form of quality ctrl. To give clients the fastest turnaround possible, the tests are sent to people logged in first.

I disagree with the premise that the site is less reputable because it’s “newer” – 7 years for this type of research is huge. Especially considering how much technology has changed in the past 10 years! I still had a flip phone (I think the razor) in 2005! If you look at site statistics, usertesting has much more traffic than any other site like it.

I also like how they pay at a set time. You know when to expect your deposit- one week after the test, to the minute. Other sites take weeks to pay and you never know when it’s coming.

Why after posing the question: “is UT legit?” You said “8/10”? Just curious as to what you would consider 10/10? Honestly, compared to all the other sites I use they are the best by far. Their support team responds quickly to any questions, they pay on time, the list goes on…

If you don’t have positive ratings and don’t get tests, that doesn’t mean they aren’t legitimate, it means they’re more legitimate! Happy clients mean more test opportunities for the good testers. Often I see people review these sites poorly because they don’t get many tests. Clients select for specific demographics no matter what research firm they use. But with usertesting, if you do well, you’ll be rewarded.

    Hope this helps

Hey Syl, an extra $100-180 per month from User Testing alone is not bad 🙂

As mentioned, I truly enjoyed my experience with User Testing and the fact that the work involved is interesting and not the same repetitive Q&A that you get with most survey sites.

You see the question, “Is User Testing Legit?” in the title because this is what people are searching for, and is more than likely how you found this Post. 8 out of 10 is a fair score, I have no issues with UT and recommend it to anyone interested in earning some extra cash.

A site that I consider to be 10/10 is a free to join learning center. This site doesn’t necessarily pay you, but teaches you how to build your own income-producing online business. You can learn more by visiting here.
