10 Tips For Working At Home

Working from home is becoming increasingly popular among Americans. The number of self-employed entrepreneurs, who run private businesses from their home offices, has noticeably boomed.

These work-from-home activities include web designing, web marketing, content writing and marketing, privately operated media business, and many more. It is reported that more than 30 million people choose to work from their private home offices, at least once a week. As the popularity spreads, the statistical curve of such people keeps moving upwards.

Almost 3 million American citizens claim to have never worked in a conventional office. They only carry out their private business activities, from their personal home office. About 54% Americans, are perfectly happy to work from home.

Being a self-employed entrepreneur, and working from your private home office can be beneficial for you. You are able to save the money required for commute. You are self-employed, so you have the liberty and flexibility to work according to your preferences, which is a huge plus.

While working from a home office is flexible and has its benefits, it can be detrimental to your productivity level. You may find it hard to focus on your work, as there is no shortage of distractions at home.  As a result, you are not very productive when you are working from home. To help you stay on the right track, here are a few tips to handle your self-run online business;

1.    Make a schedule:10 tips for working at home

The trick of productivity in an office environment is that you are made to commit to the fixed working hours. When you fix a schedule and strictly follow it, you will be able to achieve higher productivity levels. This is of great importance to your business’ success.

With that said, you do not have to follow the 9 to 5 routine. You can consider the hours when you feel like you can work more efficiently. Plan your work hours accordingly.

2.    Put on some clothes!

Get yourself ready for the day as if you were heading out the door to go somewhere. As soon as I started getting changed in the morning, trading basketball shorts and house shoes for pants, I found that I was more productive. Remaining in pajamas definitely sounds more appealing, but I believe getting dressed can really set the tone for the day.

3.    Social Embargo:

Observe a social embargo during your scheduled work timings. Use this time to focus entirely on your tasks. Do remember that this is source of your bread and butter, so it should not be taken lightly. Working from home provides a certain amount of flexibility, but you should not neglect the work. Simply request your friends, family and acquaintances to avoid contacting you during these timings.

4.    Optimizing the work space:

Having a defined work space allows you to work more efficiently. The best idea would be to select a space that is separated from potential distractions. This should be a quiet and calm space. Good lighting can also be a factor to consider. Moreover, look for a space where Internet reception is maximum.

5.    Make a To-do List:

It may sound out-of-fashion, but it is a highly useful practice. It keeps you wary of deadlines and tasks, which helps you stay determined and motivated to complete the tasks on time. It will be even better if you use a Smartphone to set reminders for tasks.

6.    Go outdoors!10 tips for working at home

When you have a typical office job, there’s a guarantee you’ll be out of the house for a portion of the day, even if it’s just for your commute. And while working from home and not having to leave is one of the benefits, it can also be really restrictive at times.

Go for a walk, take breaks, fit exercise into the schedule, meet a friend for lunch. Just a few ideas you should consider. Taking a break and stepping out of the house allows your brain to re-coop and leaves you not feeling so shut-in.

7.    Be smart with your money, Invest!?

Working from home, online in particular, takes time when building your own business. When the money starts rolling in isn’t the time to go on a shopping spree. Consider investing in your business through advertising opportunities or other ways to expand.

Create a savings plan, and save all your receipts. When you work for yourself, you don’t have access to an employers savings/retirement plan. It’s important to implement a plan that provides similar benefits, to the best of your ability. There are a number of investment options, like an IRA, that are easy to manage and provide different savings strategies. Also consider  working with a dependable accountant or CPA, to properly manage your taxes and/or payroll.

Last but not least, save money for unexpected emergencies.

8.    Let’s go on a date:

Again, Go outdoors!

We can all agree that becoming successful and tending to your work is of high importance. So is having a social life and taking a break from being at home. Set schedules with other people and step away from the mouse and keyboard.

9.    Orchestrate:

To me there’s nothing more distracting then having your work space full of clutter and being unorganized. Sure, throughout the day I may have some snacks and empty ice tea bottles build up around my desk. Along with mail and other paper for notes or what have you.

But I make sure to clean up at the end of each day in preparation for the following day. This goes along with getting yourself cleaned up each morning and setting the tone for the day.

10.    Enjoy the flexibility!

I typically work first thing in the morning for a few hours and then again late nights once the little ones are asleep. During the day when I’m not working I am able to spend time with my family and attend school or sporting events for my daughters. I could write a list for all the occasions I missed when working a 9-to-5, which will probably cause my hands to go numb, but this is not the case anymore since working on my own schedule. 🙂

10 tips for working at home

It had always been a dream of mine to be able to work on my own schedule and create success on my own. The fact that I am able to do this from a laptop is still surreal to me. The freedom of not having a ordinary job where I feel obligated to be at, doing something I dislike, and calling it a living, has been bliss.

These tips are guaranteed to provide you higher productivity levels. Try it yourself and share your experience in the comments section below.

Hey there Jason , nice tips , although I am not a fan of schedules I believe in consistency. So no matter what time of the day it is I keep doing what I have to.

Totally agree on the clothes and the social embargo.Social media can distract you for real.Even the email inbox.

The list is absolutely necessary , writing down every thought will be proved useful at a later time when you run out of ideas.

I see you are a big fun of self employment , just like me.In fact I never recommend to someone get a job and work for someone else.I believe in the power of humans , every one can be a real entrepreneur. It only needs a dream.

Good work , keep them coming , I ll be back.

      Hello Tasos Perte Tzortiz,

I couldn’t agree with you more. Becoming an entrepreneur only requires a dream followed by action. I’m guilty of “taking a break” and checking my messages on Facebook, next thing you know 30 minutes have gone by and I’m on Youtube lol. Social media can be a huge distraction.

    Hi Jason,
I can really relate to what you say, being an at home entrepreneur myself.
I had to laugh at ‘put on some clothes’ because I think it is so great and comfortable to work in pijamas but I noticed that when I did so I got more lazy into going outside to take lunch or go for a walk. I noticed too that I am more productive when I put clothes like I would do if I went to work 🙂
It is important to keep in mind that you are actually working and it can be easy to get distracted when you have the freedom to do whatever you want.
I am loosing a lot of time sometimes doing things that aren’t really related to work so I put myself a schedule that I have to respect with punctual breaks.
Thanks for the tips! This will be helpful for a lot of people

I had no idea so many people are working from home now. It makes sense because good jobs seem to be hard to come by these days. I have always wanted to work from home but never really knew what I could do or what would work for me. I plan on using all 10 of these suggestions thanks for writing this interesting article.

      Jason - 6 years ago

      Hey Merceadez,

I have to admit I didn’t know much about working from home or online not too long ago. I started working from home just this year(2015) thanks to what I learned using Wealthy Affiliate, and then applying it. I knew people were making money online, I just didn’t know I could too, and that there was a method available for everyone.

Best decision I made in a long while 🙂

There is a small learning curve, and it doesn’t happen overnight. But if you stick with it, it will be very rewarding. It’s important to learn at your own pace, ask questions, be patient, and apply good methods such as the ones listed in this article.

I feel anyone can be successful working from home, thanks for commenting and good luck!

Great info about working at home tips. I’m a big advocate of working from home and the reason is because you can be financially independent and live the lifestyle you want. You have no boss, no pressure. But unlike what most people think or know about working from home, it’ not easy at all to run your own online business. It takes time and effort and self-discipline. But it has some disadvantages such as communication deficit. I think work from home is not for everyone.

      Jason - 6 years ago

      Rufat you are right,

Working from home or online is not for everybody. Some people have become so adjusted to working a 9-to-5 and are use to having a manager or boss watch over them and direct there every move. They are only efficient while working this way.

It takes independence, and self-motivation to work for yourself and be your own boss. You have to motivate yourself at times when there may not be anyone else around to.

Another main thing is the security. People aren’t willing to risk the security that a traditional job provides, regardless if there happy or not. I understand completely. But if you don’t take risks you can end up spending your life in a miserable way doing something you hate doing almost everyday and calling it your living.

This was the case for me, but I looked for alternatives and took action. Haven’t been happier since. It didn’t happen right away but I was commited to my online business(s) and it worked out!

      Thanks for commenting Roamy,

Yes and the majority of the time one works from home, it is doing so using a computer and the internet. You can VERY easily be distracted while on the internet. You may be wanting to briefly check a social media account next thing you know half an hour has gone by and your watching funny videos on Youtube.

I like to put my cellphone in another room, TV off, and limit myself from distractions when it’s time to work.

Being organized and keeping a schedule as well as the other helpful tips discussed above could help counter distractions and help one be more productive working from home.
