10 Tips For Working At Home
Working from home is becoming increasingly popular among Americans. The number of self-employed entrepreneurs, who run private businesses from their home offices, has noticeably boomed.
These work-from-home activities include web designing, web marketing, content writing and marketing, privately operated media business, and many more. It is reported that more than 30 million people choose to work from their private home offices, at least once a week. As the popularity spreads, the statistical curve of such people keeps moving upwards.
Almost 3 million American citizens claim to have never worked in a conventional office. They only carry out their private business activities, from their personal home office. About 54% Americans, are perfectly happy to work from home.
Being a self-employed entrepreneur, and working from your private home office can be beneficial for you. You are able to save the money required for commute. You are self-employed, so you have the liberty and flexibility to work according to your preferences, which is a huge plus.
While working from a home office is flexible and has its benefits, it can be detrimental to your productivity level. You may find it hard to focus on your work, as there is no shortage of distractions at home. As a result, you are not very productive when you are working from home. To help you stay on the right track, here are a few tips to handle your self-run online business;
1. Make a schedule:
The trick of productivity in an office environment is that you are made to commit to the fixed working hours. When you fix a schedule and strictly follow it, you will be able to achieve higher productivity levels. This is of great importance to your business’ success.
With that said, you do not have to follow the 9 to 5 routine. You can consider the hours when you feel like you can work more efficiently. Plan your work hours accordingly.
2. Put on some clothes!
Get yourself ready for the day as if you were heading out the door to go somewhere. As soon as I started getting changed in the morning, trading basketball shorts and house shoes for pants, I found that I was more productive. Remaining in pajamas definitely sounds more appealing, but I believe getting dressed can really set the tone for the day.
3. Social Embargo:
Observe a social embargo during your scheduled work timings. Use this time to focus entirely on your tasks. Do remember that this is source of your bread and butter, so it should not be taken lightly. Working from home provides a certain amount of flexibility, but you should not neglect the work. Simply request your friends, family and acquaintances to avoid contacting you during these timings.
4. Optimizing the work space:
Having a defined work space allows you to work more efficiently. The best idea would be to select a space that is separated from potential distractions. This should be a quiet and calm space. Good lighting can also be a factor to consider. Moreover, look for a space where Internet reception is maximum.
5. Make a To-do List:
It may sound out-of-fashion, but it is a highly useful practice. It keeps you wary of deadlines and tasks, which helps you stay determined and motivated to complete the tasks on time. It will be even better if you use a Smartphone to set reminders for tasks.
6. Go outdoors!
When you have a typical office job, there’s a guarantee you’ll be out of the house for a portion of the day, even if it’s just for your commute. And while working from home and not having to leave is one of the benefits, it can also be really restrictive at times.
Go for a walk, take breaks, fit exercise into the schedule, meet a friend for lunch. Just a few ideas you should consider. Taking a break and stepping out of the house allows your brain to re-coop and leaves you not feeling so shut-in.
7. Be smart with your money, Invest!?
Working from home, online in particular, takes time when building your own business. When the money starts rolling in isn’t the time to go on a shopping spree. Consider investing in your business through advertising opportunities or other ways to expand.
Create a savings plan, and save all your receipts. When you work for yourself, you don’t have access to an employers savings/retirement plan. It’s important to implement a plan that provides similar benefits, to the best of your ability. There are a number of investment options, like an IRA, that are easy to manage and provide different savings strategies. Also consider working with a dependable accountant or CPA, to properly manage your taxes and/or payroll.
Last but not least, save money for unexpected emergencies.
8. Let’s go on a date:
Again, Go outdoors!
We can all agree that becoming successful and tending to your work is of high importance. So is having a social life and taking a break from being at home. Set schedules with other people and step away from the mouse and keyboard.
To me there’s nothing more distracting then having your work space full of clutter and being unorganized. Sure, throughout the day I may have some snacks and empty ice tea bottles build up around my desk. Along with mail and other paper for notes or what have you.
But I make sure to clean up at the end of each day in preparation for the following day. This goes along with getting yourself cleaned up each morning and setting the tone for the day.
10. Enjoy the flexibility!
I typically work first thing in the morning for a few hours and then again late nights once the little ones are asleep. During the day when I’m not working I am able to spend time with my family and attend school or sporting events for my daughters. I could write a list for all the occasions I missed when working a 9-to-5, which will probably cause my hands to go numb, but this is not the case anymore since working on my own schedule. 🙂
It had always been a dream of mine to be able to work on my own schedule and create success on my own. The fact that I am able to do this from a laptop is still surreal to me. The freedom of not having a ordinary job where I feel obligated to be at, doing something I dislike, and calling it a living, has been bliss.
